New Studio
After a two-year hiatus for the deployment to Afghanistan, Skip has a new studio. It is located in the Riverside Business Park, just northwest of Asheville on the French Broad River. An open house will be held in June. It's also open by appointment before then.
"Ten Years": Retrospective exhibit at the University of North Carolina at Asheville
The University of North Carolina at Asheville (UNCA) recently hosted a ten-year retrospective of Skip's work. The show was in the Highsmith Gallery in the Highsmith Student Center.
Rohde graduated from UNCA's Fine Art program in 2003 with a concentration in painting. He opened a studio in Asheville's River Arts District and quickly became an integral part of its rapidly growing art community. Rohde served as President of the River District Artists for three years, guiding the organization through its formative stages, and helping the group become one of the most influential artist organizations in the city. During this time, Rohde's paintings were exhibited widely, from Washington, DC, to Mobile, AL, and won awards in regional and national juried exhibitions.
Rohde deployed with the State Department and Corps of Engineers to Iraq for 18 months from 2008 to 2010. After a period back in the studio, he deployed again with the State Department to Afghanistan for a year. He returned home late last year.
"Ten Years" included artworks from all these periods. There were several paintings from the "Meditation on War" series, two from the "Twisted Tales" satirical paintings, the "Portraits from Iraq" paintings, as well as some of the "Faces of Afghanistan" drawings.
