Skip Rohde"Old Times"

"With any luck, most of us will live to become senior citizens. Society, however, teaches us to dread old age. Media floods us with images of the young. Older people, when depicted at all, are often ill, grumpy, or barely able to function. The truth is that aging is an incredibly complex process. As our experiences accumulate, they add richness, depth, and subtlety to life. All these events make us who we are.

Half of the paintings in this show examine particular aspects of growing older. Some are based on artworks by Titian, Michelangelo, Manet, and Renoir. In these, their focus on youth was upended and replaced with the realities and experiences of time. The other paintings are portraits of specific individuals. Each face is a record of a unique life. Within these faces are the experiences of teachers, parents, office workers, and farmers, to name but a few.

Which brings us to you, the viewer. You are aging. What have your experiences been? How does your life compare with the people and concepts shown here?"

When you're through with the images, read the review of the show by Connie Bostic in the Mountain Xpress newspaper.
